Punk, Anime, Stormtroopers, Transvestites, and Strip Poker with a Cylon

I took part in some very entertaining events recently and am just now blogging about them because... well...

Anyway, March 1st I went with a roommate and a coworker to see NOFX. This was quite exciting for me because up until that point I had never actually been to a punk show (something that I am quite ashamed of) and because NOFX are, to use a term I just recently coined, "fucking awesome." Still need to see my favorite punk band Bad Religion, but NOFX is definitely a close second.

There were two opening acts, the first of which was a Canadian punk band named the Flatliners. They were decent, for a live punk act anyway. No way to know in those circumstances if they were actually musically talented. The best part of their performance was, without a doubt, that as soon as they took the stage, before a single note was played, almost the entire audience gave them the finger and yelled at them to "GET THE FUCK OFF THE STAGE!" Yeah, punk rock concerts are that awesome.

No Use for a Name was second in the line up. They were good. Not much else to say there.

I think it's safe to say that NOFX totally rocked the shit. I expected them to be awesome live, and they did not disappoint. They played some great songs, including Bottles to the Ground, Radio, Strait Edge, Murder the Government, Separation of Church and Skate, and, one of my personal favorites, Franc0-UnAmerican. They also spent about half the time they were on stage talking and just generally bullshitting with the crowd. It was great. The drummer, Erik Sandin, was outfitted with a siren that he would sound when Fat Mike went on for too long without playing anything. That, my friends, is how you run a concert.

Oh, and Fat Mike gave some guy in the pit $100 to eat one of his boogers. Which was great until the act was topped by another guy who ate one for $5. That's entertainment.

Also: punk rock pits are quite fun. So much joyful violence.

The following weekend I attended All-Con, a local multi-format pop culture convention held annually in Addison. It's always amusing to see an Imperial Stormtrooper posing with some random anime character for a picture being taken by a person in full Rennaissance garb. It was a good con, as it always is.

The Rocky Horror performance on Friday night was one of the best I've been to. The crowd was really energetic.

Saturday night was the traditional All-Con burlesque show featuring the Lollybombs. Any burlesque show that has Battlestar Galactica and Napoleon Dynamite themed routines is a damn good burlesque show.

I also got Aaron Douglas' autograph (he plays Chief Tyrol on Battlestar Galactica). Turns out he's a fraking cool guy in real life.

I've got more to write about, but I'll seperate that into a different post in attempt to be a little more organized.
